Semiconductor Intelligence, a market research institution, recently predicted that the global chip market will shrink by 6% in 2023.

The agency’s forecast is much more optimistic than that of Malcolm Penn, who predicted that the chip market would decline by 22% in the coming year.

From the macro level, the agency pointed out that every 3 percentage points deceleration of global GDP growth will reduce the growth of semiconductor market by 16 percentage points. Its prediction of market growth in 2022 is based on the growth of global GDP. Since it is expected that global GDP will continue to decelerate by 0.3 to 1.0 percentage points in 2023, the chip market will also decline accordingly.

The agency also said that if the global economy is not weaker than currently expected, the semiconductor market should recover moderately in the second half of 2023, but the global economic recession is still likely to intensify. Bloomberg survey shows that the probability of recession in the United States in the next 12 months is 48%, and that in the euro area is 80%.

From the perspective of category breakdown, the agency expects that the supply problem of the semiconductor market will gradually subside in 2023, the traditional smartphone and PC markets should resume positive growth, and the driving role of emerging application markets such as automobile and the Internet of Things (IoT) will also be further highlighted.
